I am Devon Rowland: wedding, portrait, and family photographer. I also enjoy photographing dance, fire, and events, with the occasional travel photography thrown in from time to time. My work is fun, colorful, and unconventional which also happen to be words my friends use to describe me.
Past clients have said I am easy to work with, that my ability to be everywhere and capture everything provided them with pictures of moments they didn't even know were happening, and that I was the least stressful part of the wedding. One of the best compliments is when a camera-shy person who is dreading photos leaves the session saying, "That wasn't so bad!" or even, "That was fun!"
When not behind the camera, I like to swing dance, travel, watch bad television (like Legend of the Seeker), and read good books (such as The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin). My cuddly cat, Cassidy, hangs out with me as much as she can and she'll likely be sitting in my lap while I edit your photos or answer your emails. Thankfully she hasn't tried to help out too much--yet.
Your love, your life, your family, your identity are all beautiful. I have always been and will always be LGBTQIA+ inclusive, and I am happy to work with you no matter who you are, where you are from or how you got here.
London is my favorite city in the world. I was fortunate enough to do an internship there with Youth Music Theatre UK back before I knew I wanted to be behind the camera, and I would live in that city again in a heartbeat. Growing up in Green Bay, Wisconsin did not prepare me for the cosmopolitan cities I would live in later in life (The Hague, Rome, Baltimore, and London) but definitely prepared me for my current location of Blacksburg, Virginia. I'm here with my partner who is chasing his dream of veterinary medicine, and I'm enjoying the southern hospitality, amazing mountain views, and frequent road trips as I still work and play up and down the East Coast.
Yes, that means I still photograph in Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington DC, Alexandria, Frederick, and more. When you move around a lot and live in four countries by the time you're seventeen, it's hard to stay still and life on the road is as comfortable as yoga pants in the living room. Home base may be the New River Valley (for now), but I'm happy to work with you all across Maryland, DC, Virginia, and any other destination that strikes your fancy.
I have always been a voracious reader. As an adult most of my book consumption comes in the form of audiobooks, but I keep paper copies of Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Kingkiller Chronicles, and the Mists of Avalon + its prequels.
I recently finished the audiobook version of David Litt's Thanks, Obama: My Hopey, Changey White House Years and find myself going back to it on occasion when I need a laugh. I'm also re-reading The Dresden Files, which I've already gone through probably a half dozen times.
